A Day to Celebrate…

Throughout our journey of adoption, one thing has been crystal clear to me…people don’t know enough about it.  There are common assumptions thrown around about choosing the child you want from a line-up of babies, dealing with a nightmare teenager who can’t come to terms with the fact that they are adopted, their “real” parents not being responsible enough to look after them, and lastly, the kind of person that would “give their child away”.  I have to believe that people don’t mean to be rude or hurtful in the comments that they fling around about adoption and that they simply don’t know any better.  How could they?  Very few ever actually venture into the world of adoption and see for themselves what really lies beneath the surface.  It is the “few’s” responsibility to inform and educate those around them, if we are to move closer to being a people who truly understand adoption.  This is why we are SO excited to be ambassadors for this inaugural day…

Adoption is incredibly close to our hearts (for obvious reasons).  Adoption brought us a baby boy who we love more than anything in the entire world.  A baby boy who’s smile melts away the darkest of days.  A baby boy who places such huge responsibility on us as he relies on us for his every need.  A baby boy who teaches us about acceptance and unconditional love.  A baby boy who we could never again picture our lives without.  Our baby boy.

For those who are reading our blog for the first time, let me give you a summary of our adoption story…

After two years of marriage, we discovered that our plans of having a baby were being hindered by a thieving little monster called PCOS (Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome).  We collected information surrounding our options for fertility treatments and after much discussion, and a sequence of events, neither of us felt that this was the route we should  be pursuing at this stage of our lives.   Instead, we started to research the available routes we could take toward adoption.

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of information available for South African’s wanting to adopt locally.  There are plenty of blogs which tell the stories of American families adopting children from other countries, but we could not find anything local.  We slowly started to filter out some of the options we were able to find due to high costs involved, lack of communication, inability to get hold of the right person, etc until we settled on one adoption agency.  Abba Adoptions in Pretoria, South Africa completely blew us away with their “above and beyond” attitude towards our case.

We journeyed through the official screening process for 4 months, blogging the details for those who will come after us.  Such a short period of time, yet I can guarantee you it felt like 1 million years!  Then, one day, we received “the call” and we were parents to THE most incredible kid in the world.  All in all, from the day we started our enquiries to the day we got our call, we waited a period of 9 months…a “pregnancy”.  We still have a lot of paperwork to get through, which is not a quick thing in a country famous for terrible Home Affairs service.  That doesn’t matter though.  All that matters is that our baby is home with us and we get to soak up all the joy that he brings to our lives.  Every bit of paperwork nightmare fades away when I see that gorgeous face.  Don’t believe me?  See for yourself…

Although adoption is an incredible adventure filled with many highs, it definitely has it’s fair share of lows (you just need to read a few older posts to figure that out).  The support of friends, family and complete strangers was the only thing that helped us through it.  People who celebrated with us during this time brought us that bit closer to the light at the end of the very long tunnel.

We want to express the same support for others out there who are going through the adoption process and we would love for you to join us in this celebration of the gift that is adoption.  Let’s have a look at how you can do that…

1.  SAVE THE DATE for the 9th of November 2014!!!
2.  Head on over to the World Adoption Day website and join in on the movement!
3.  Visit their “Families” section and make a donation to bring a family that little bit closer to their dream of adoption.
4.  Post an open hand “smiley” selfie on the 9th November 2014 using that hash tag #WorldAdoptionDay

Let’s work together to make this a worldwide revolution!
